Community Service
Andrew Block, our President, is committed to giving back to the community. In 2007 he received the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award for community service spanning a life-time and in 2009 he was nominated for Delta’s Citizen of the Year.
We have a number of non-profit organizations as clients who do an immense amount of good in the community, which we are proud to support financially with regular donations, as well as in other ways.
Some of Andrew’s Community Service Projects
Andrew is a member of the North Delta Rotary Club and a past director of the Boys and Girls Club Community Services of Delta Richmond.
One of the most rewarding projects Andrew worked on was Operation Remembrance. A local police officer, Marc Searle, was researching the history of the RCMP and came across a cemetery with some 35 WW1 veterans that did not have grave stones. Together with the help of Charan Gill and Satbir Cheema of the PICS organization the money necessary to complete this project was raised and the markers were laid with full military honors.
Andrew has been instrumental in creating bridges through his business and political connections. In 2007 3 farm workers passed away when the bus they were being transported in flipped on the freeway. Communication seemed to have stalled so Andrew contacted WorkSafe BC and organized a meeting with the South Asian community to get things moving. This was done behind closed doors with no cameras or politicians. Communication between the two groups has generated goodwill in a variety of areas.
Andrew is a founding member of the Delta Rotary Awards. This is an annual event that recognizes school age young people who have demonstrated service to others and/or have risen above adversity. Each year some 30 young people from Delta are nominated and their stories would bring tears to your eyes while restoring your faith in human nature. There are young people all around us who quietly do amazing things!
Inspired by his mother, Andrew started the Fleetwood Seniors Outdoor Recreational Facility Project in Surrey, BC. Together with the City of Surrey Parks Department, the Provincial Government and Rick Hart of the Fleetwood Community Association the Project was completed. The park has a circular design and specialized outdoor recreational equipment encouraging mobility, coordination and balance. It is inspiring to see people of all ages using this beautiful park.
